Top Drug Crimes in Florida

In 2014, more than 1.5 million people were arrested on narcotic, or drug-related charges in the United States. Each year in the state of Florida, thousands of people face drug charges, which can result in loss of jobs, relationships and custody of children. Due to its expansive coastline, Florida is an ideal location for the trafficking of illegal substances. To combat this, Florida has some of the strictest drug laws in the U.S. Here are the top drug-related charges.

#1 Drug Possession

Possession is the most common drug charge. In Florida, unlawful Possession of a Controlled Substance can include having heroin, cocaine, methamphetamines, synthetic drugs and prescription pills. Depending on the amount found, the accused could be subject to a third-degree felony charge, face up to five years in prison and a $5,000 fine.

#2 Sale

In Florida, Controlled Dangerous Substances (CDS) are divided into five categories — called schedules — based on the addictive properties of the drug and the rate of abuse. Penalties for the sale of a controlled substance depend on the drug and the amount of it a person is selling. This can be punishable as a misdemeanor or felony and the penalties vary. For example, a First Degree Felony could result in thirty years in prison while a misdemeanor mandates one year in prison and a $1,000 fine.

#3 Trafficking

If a person is charged with Drug Trafficking, they were in possession of a large amount of narcotics usually with the Intent to Sell. They can receive a minimum of three years in prison and $25,000 in fines.

#4 Making and Manufacturing

Manufacturing or cultivating illegal substances can result in felony charges, fines, and probation, which can increase if the place of manufacturing is located near a school or playground. This charge encompasses any individual involved in any part of the drug making process.
